with sand between our toes

It has been a long time since I rode over 800m of hills and over three hours. In fact, it has been three years! A few weekends ago Hero and I decided to tackle Bethels beach riding out to the old truck that is now a pleasant cafe sitting amongst the black sand and grass of this wild west coast beach. It was a great ride with a tail wind home and 30+ degree temperatures adding vivid contrasts to my growing tan lines.

And then it got better.

A couple of weeks ago Bernard, Hero and I headed out around the North Western bike path, Greenhithe, and then along the green route to Devonport to hunt the final Labyrinth after Amber let us know about it. It was a grey old day, continuing with our fabulous summer even though the weather man promised something much more enticing. It rained, then we were dried off by the sun, then it rained again. Once we found the Labyrinth we headed to the ferry via Vauxhall and Cheltenham and had a coffee at Vauxhall cafe which served Altezano coffee just superbly. It was a great adventure… which is why we ride.

labyrinth hunting

A little while ago I heard there was a Labyrinth in Auckland. After procrastinating I finally did some research and found out there are actually two and one of the two was less than a kilometre from my house. Labyrinths are an ancient symbol of wholeness and represent a journey to your own centre and back out into the world again. The path you follow in a Labyrinth is supposed to be a metaphor for life’s journey and is supposed to achieve personal, psychological and spiritual transformation. This seemed like a perfect thing to do one New Year’s day so Gayle and I cruised around the city on our bicycles, labyrinth hunting, coffee tasting, mushroom eating and generally embracing the first day of 2012.

summer solstice ride

Yesterday it was the summer solstice. Yes, half way through. The lovely Gayle organised a wee ride which of course involved coffee (and pictured additives) and DB pointed out that it was the summer solstice. There is a summer solstice ride tradition of which I’ve never partaken in due to the early rising. On this day we (DB, Emma, Gayle and Jay) did not see the sun rise but it was a beautiful morning, one where you could just keep riding for hours on end and bask in natures glory.
